Whoa! | Bathroom REupdate

Well it's been pretty damn long since I've given you guys any good stuff lately. I failed miserably at the OCD challenge last year and for that I am sorry. BUT we are back in action and we have decided to stick with working on one room at a time but not necessarily finish in a month's time. This really allows us to focus on one space and pay attention to every detail and really perfect it.

The first project of the year was the main bathroom. You may be saying "Hey, didn't she already do that one?". Yes. Yes we did. I am a perfectionist and I knew it needed to be done again. I wasn't happy with the wall color and there were too many unfinished projects in the space. It was somewhat embarrassing when we had guests over and it looked like a Sundance film production office (whatever that looks like, I just made that up) exploded in there. I think it wasn't completed for so long because I was sort of scared to do some of the projects that needed to be done. I was so overwhelmed by the massive "shelf" under the window that I just walked away every time I thought about finishing it. There were many things in there that I hadn't yet learned how to do and I should have just jumped in and been ready to make those mistakes and learn on my own. In the end I did some trim work that I'm proud of and it didn't look terrible!

Plans for that room have changed several times. At one point we were going to put up paneling to create really elegant wainscoting and cover up the extremely damaged walls. That was nixed because my uncle was never able to come over and put it up. Then I thought about doing some sort of shiplap myself as the cuts would be a little easier. I felt that it would make the space look too busy because there are too many angles already.

[did I mention that I am currently at Starbucks on my computer lookin' classy and stuff?? All true. Except for maybe the classy part..]

New Plan: Make the bathroom not ugly.

Okay, we got this.

My plan was to create a super simple space that took your eyes off of the shitty walls and weird angles and bring them to the beautiful fixtures and duh, the tub. I hope when you look at the changes we made, you will feel the same way. :)

We changed the wall color to more of a grey than purple shade and it's so pretty! I often get made fun of for having everything grey (mostly by my mother-in-law) but I have realized just recently that it doesn't matter if I only like grey! I do it well and it makes me happy:) #thegreystays

Switched out the bulky (but still my favorite!) mirror for a softer edged mirror. I also found a great deal on a vanity light and decided to switch out the brushed nickel for an oil rubbed bronze to match the rest in the space. The old vanity light was virtually brand new but how do you pass up a light for $11?! The old vanity light is for sale if anyone is interested!

It only took 3 years but we finally have a towel ring! I actually hate towel rings - generally they look dated to me but this satin gold finish was too pretty. I also got matching toilet paper holder and hook for the back of the door.

Our short little door just barely can handle my rob!

I didn't end up showing this in the original blog post because we never switched it out, but those of you who have been to my house probably remember this hideous ceiling fan! God. I could not stand this. I refused to clean it after we moved in because I hated it so much.

Well...

Gosh. Isn't she cute?? This light has way more swag. (get it - swag?!)

I have heard that  it is feng shui to have a plant in every room and I am really going to try my best to keep all these little plants alive! This little guy is a split leaf philodendron and he is still alive! Go me:)

I was able to finish the trim around the weird shelf area and I'm so happy it's finally finished! It just gives the space a more completed look -- after three years...

We painted the door white awhile ago to brighten up the hallway but we will hopefully be replacing doors pretty soon.

This tiny bathroom doesn't have much storage at all so I had to get pretty creative. Normally I hate re-purposing things into something they're not. Eg. This is actually a wine rack holding towels. I had no other option and this one is simple enough that doesn't scream "I'm a wine rack!". Actually Amazon mailed me two on accident so I DO plan to put the other one in the dining room with wine! ha.

As I mentioned before, most of the walls were damaged from removing the wallpaper after we purchased the house. In certain light it just looked awful. To cover up and take your eyes off the imperfections we had to get creative with some art and other tricks. As you know, our house was built in 1891 and the patent print of toilet paper is dated 1891 so I felt that was pretty fitting for our vintage little bathroom:)
There are still some imperfections on the walls but they don't stand out like they did before.

Of course we had to do a little accessorizing!

. . .

So what do ya think??

Having the main bathroom finally [about 93%] finished motivates me to work on other areas in the house and do those "scary" projects! I love that it's completely organized and there are things in the space to keep you from seeing the flaws.

So. I have been listening to podcasts to keep me entertained while at work. If you don't already, please give a listen to The Brain Candy Podcast! It's Susie Meister and Sarah Rice from The Real World/The Challenge. I am utterly obsessed and hoping to end up as their best friend so write in and tell them how cool I am. K. Bye.

UPDATE: Susie actually wrote back to me so I'm basically floating through life today.

Please give them a listen!

in with the old | my best thrift finds

*as you read through this post, have  Thrift Shop by Ryan Lewis and Macklemore  [link attached] play in the background, as I did when I was posting this:)  My husband is - for lack of a better word - cheap. He means well, but it really puts a wrench in most of my design plans. This just makes me work ten times harder to find the best deal out there and still maintain the integrity of my design.  Where do you go for such deals you ask?  Goodwill, duh!  I'm obsessed. Luckily I can soothe my infatuations less than a mile from my house!  Of course I also take a stop into TJ Maxx that's right next door and Pot Belly's too, but that's a topic for another day..  I usually get to GW once a week and I can definitely tell when I haven't been in awhile. ...wow, it really is sounding like an addiction, huh? First, I scout out the furniture - usually I don't find anything because a) It's already been picked through or b) it's t...

our upstairs bath | total gut

This is probably to biggest demo project on the house. This is the yucky space previously known as "the bathroom". Yes, that is my husband in the reflection:) Apparently we forgot to get better "before" photos.. The dimensions of the room were 4x9--not even wide enough for a tub! So this was our first mission when planning out this tiny bath-make room for tub!  Here's a fun little fact: this is the only room in the house that I didn't step more than 2 feet in the doorway. That's how bad this space was!  Here's some fun demo that I luckily did not have to take part in any of it, not even clean up! This is the view coming from the front bedroom on the house. We also did some knocking down of walls and putting up of walls in this room. Luckily it was big enough and didn't take away too much space.  Little bro, pretending to help with the demo...  And this is the guy who was the muscle in all of this:)  ...
