When we purchased our house the bathrooms were heinous - I wouldn't even step foot into them. They were so bad, I had my uncle replace the downstairs toilet before he did anything [upstairs] because otherwise I would have no where to go throughout the upstairs renovations. It was a long wait but I think we are pretty happy with the results of our main bath so far!
I feel like I haven't had any big updates on the house in awhile for you guys.. I wanted to give you a peek at phase I of main bath (it's not 100% complete, but I trust you to use your imagination for my vision:))
BEFORE
First impressions? Scene in a horror film.. Something in a run down insane asylum..
As you can see, this bathroom has ZERO function. You basically run into the tub when you walk in the door, you're leaning over a counter to get the sink, you have to hop in order to see yourself in the mirror and a real ceiling fan as a fart fan- really? Okay we need to execute a plan here...
My original plan was just to knock down that weird sink area out completely and totally expand the space. We quickly found out that inside there is the ceiling of our back entrance - okay, scratch that - next plan.
Usually I am pretty good with working with what I have, but this was a challenge. I honestly couldn't see myself continuing with this layout as our main bath.
It wasn't long until I came up with a plan I was very pleased with:)
AFTER!
Every surface had to be completely redone - remove wall paper, linoleum flooring torn up, trim painted etc. Most of the plumbing had to be rerouted as well - we moved the tub so it is the first thing you see when you come in and the sink was relocated next to the door - much more functional if you ask me!
I had a vision for the flooring and it was nearly impossible to pull together. We had to purchase sheets of tile that were black and white mixed together and then cut each black piece out by hand in order to achieve this pattern. Actually just days before our wedding, hubs and I were cutting all of the pieces out - only to get a few sheets done. We can home to a finished floor - done by my amazing uncle - with no complaints:) It was so refreshing coming home to a completed design!
Here is a more detailed shot of the wrap around effect I chose:)
Love my honeycomb tiles!
The tub was in very poor condition when we moved in - peeling and chipping paint and powder blue surround - no thanks..
Certain things I am okay attempting to do on my own, but some things just need to be done by a professional. We decided to fork out the money and hired a professional tub painter (very difficult to find at a decent price by the way) - it turned out great!
..and of course we had to get this amazing faucet with shower attachment. Which was a fortune - we could have replaced the entire tub with a more modern version at the same cost but it just wouldn't be the same.
This is the new location for the sink - way better than inside of a counter, right?
That weird sink/counter/ledge is now just a place to display cute littles:) We covered it in a wood flooring laid diagonally - super cute!
I will take any chance to install flooring on a diagonal - it just adds more character and dimension to a space.
These lights were actually existing in the home - obviously in brass, duh, everything else was brass! Instead of tossing them, we decided to save money and take advantage of the missing shades and put in Edison bulbs! I spray painted them with Oil Rubbed Bronze I believe. This saved us over $50, I'm sure!
Every time someone comes over, they always make a comment about how short the doorway is - maybe it's not a huge deal for us because we're not exactly "tall"... To give you an idea, this is a comparison with the "normal" doorway to the kitchen. Almost a twelve inches difference - ha!
As I said before this is only phase I - I have a few other ideas for the complete package, but that may take a while to finish. We still have a few finishing touches to take care of i.e that silly fan - but I would take this over the before any day!
What are your thoughts?
