operation : organize

Husbie informed me that last weeks post title is called "click bait".. Hey, at least it worked!

Our grass is continuing to grow and we are so happy about it:) We still have a ton of yard work left to do though.. I am offering steak and beer to anyone who comes to lend a hand! Anyone??

As things grow on the outside, I am doing a few organizing projects of my own on the inside. One thing that I have been wanting to do is condense our DVD collection. We have gone through and weeded out multiple times and we still have over 100 DVDs...

Here is our collection at its prime

Doesn't look like much does it? Well think of it double deep.

At first I thought it would be a great idea to alphabetize them.. For someone who can't make up their mind on how they like their furniture, this is not the best idea. I was constantly moving them and making sure they stayed in order. It also didn't help that we moved about 5 times with all of these either! When we did the big move back to our home state, we weeded out quite a bit but were still left with a big load.

I did research on different ideas on how to organize them. I didn't think the binder idea would work with our lifestyle so I scratched that out. I came across quite a few that suggested boxing then in boxes with their cases - how many boxes would I have to purchase to fit all of them?? Then I came across a few that suggested taking them out of their cases and putting them into little sleeves inside of a cute box. Ding Ding Ding!

I battled with myself for a few days: Okay, what do we do with the cases? Store them in a box in the basement to gather dust? Can we toss them?

In the end I decided to throw them away. Here are a few of the reasons why I was okay doing this:

1. Who actually buys DVDs anymore? No one..
2. Why would we ever need the cases anyways? We probably won't.
3. I hate things collecting dust in the basement for "just in case" purposes. Boom.
4. DVDs are about to be obsolete and we will probably just throw them away in 10 years anyways.
5. Netflix - problem solved.

It felt liberating to see stacks and stacks of DVD cases be tossed in the RECYCLE bin! Although, it did feel like we were breaking the law or something at the same time:/

Here are some of the steps we took:

1. Gather all DVDs in a pile in the living room.

2. Organize them into a few separate categories.

You can categorize these how ever you see fit for your home. For us, we don't really watch scary movies - therefore we didn't need that category. In our house we have tons of Dramas - those needed to be divided into a few different categories : Chick flick, family, etc.

Here are the categories that we will be trying out for awhile:

Drama
Chick Flick
Thriller
Action
Family
Comedy
Television Series
Music

It was really challenging to decide where some movies would go. i.e. Twilight - Do I make a sci-fi/fantasy category? It's not quite an action flick.. Okay, family it is! I am sure I will be changing out and adding more in the future. I feel like organization is a big trial and error - which is good when you come to what works for you and your home.

3. Alphabetize each category

When I am not asked to recite the alphabet everyday in school, it becomes difficult to alphabetize things in a timely manner..

4. Slip into little sleeves.

I purchases these sleeves from Amazon and they are super cheap! I bought purple and white - they have many other options as well:)

They are double sided which I didn't realize until they arrived but it turned out to be pretty handy for the TV Series and movies with a separate special features disc.

5. File sleeves away in a cute little box and label according to categories!

I have yet to make cute little labels for the different categories so they are currently separated by sticky notes..

I also plan to label each individual sleeve with the movie title so it is easier to search and also to make sure they get put back in the correct spot - we don't want to lose any movies!

6. Enjoy one more organized corner in your house:)

This is the pile of cases that we ended up recycling!

There you have it, folks! It really only took about two hours and I just created so much extra space for myself! And less hassle for myself in the future!

How do you store your movie collection?

Yesterday I saw my idol, Nicole Curtis!

Then I woke up and realized how real that dream just felt. Apparently she didn't fly to my house in her helicopter just to help me build a dog run for Tiff...

Whoa! | Bathroom REupdate

Well it's been pretty damn long since I've given you guys any good stuff lately. I failed miserably at the OCD challenge last year and for that I am sorry. BUT we are back in action and we have decided to stick with working on one room at a time but not necessarily finish in a month's time. This really allows us to focus on one space and pay attention to every detail and really perfect it.  The first project of the year was the main bathroom. You may be saying "Hey, didn't she already do that one?" . Yes. Yes we did. I am a perfectionist and I knew it needed to be done again. I wasn't happy with the wall color and there were too many unfinished projects in the space. It was somewhat embarrassing when we had guests over and it looked like a Sundance film production office (whatever that looks like, I just made that up) exploded in there. I think it wasn't completed for so long because I was sort of scared to do some of the projects that needed to b...

in with the old | my best thrift finds

*as you read through this post, have  Thrift Shop by Ryan Lewis and Macklemore  [link attached] play in the background, as I did when I was posting this:)  My husband is - for lack of a better word - cheap. He means well, but it really puts a wrench in most of my design plans. This just makes me work ten times harder to find the best deal out there and still maintain the integrity of my design.  Where do you go for such deals you ask?  Goodwill, duh!  I'm obsessed. Luckily I can soothe my infatuations less than a mile from my house!  Of course I also take a stop into TJ Maxx that's right next door and Pot Belly's too, but that's a topic for another day..  I usually get to GW once a week and I can definitely tell when I haven't been in awhile. ...wow, it really is sounding like an addiction, huh? First, I scout out the furniture - usually I don't find anything because a) It's already been picked through or b) it's t...

our upstairs bath | total gut

This is probably to biggest demo project on the house. This is the yucky space previously known as "the bathroom". Yes, that is my husband in the reflection:) Apparently we forgot to get better "before" photos.. The dimensions of the room were 4x9--not even wide enough for a tub! So this was our first mission when planning out this tiny bath-make room for tub!  Here's a fun little fact: this is the only room in the house that I didn't step more than 2 feet in the doorway. That's how bad this space was!  Here's some fun demo that I luckily did not have to take part in any of it, not even clean up! This is the view coming from the front bedroom on the house. We also did some knocking down of walls and putting up of walls in this room. Luckily it was big enough and didn't take away too much space.  Little bro, pretending to help with the demo...  And this is the guy who was the muscle in all of this:)  ...
