and the rest is history..

I'm not much of a history buff, but since I got so much great feedback from my little post about the pictures of the original homeowner I received from a previous homeowner - I have to give the people what they want - and unfortunately for me, it's some history..

Sometimes I find it hard to grasp how truly old our little Victorian actually is. I did some research on a [hopefully] reliable website to see what was going on the year our house was built - 1891. I have heard from the appraiser that our house was actually built in 1888, but I have mostly found that it was actually built in 1891 - so until we validate otherwise, we are sticking with that:)

...

So 124 years ago we had a president named Benjamin Harrison in charge.

What a dapper fellow he was. I wonder what year people started smiling in photos..

Some other big events in 1891:

Feb 9th - 1st shipment of asparagus arrives in SF from Sacramento
Mar 28th - 1st world weightlifting championship held
Apr 1st - The Wrigley Company is founded in Chicago, Illinois.
[my husband would be thrilled to here this little piece of information!]
May 5th - Music Hall (Carnegie Hall) opens in NY, Tchaikovsky as guest conductor
Jul 7th - Travelers checks patents
Jul 14th - John T Smith patents corkboard
Aug 24th - Thomas Edison patents motion picture camera

another dapper fellow

Sep 3rd - Cotton pickers organize union & stage strike in Texas
Sep 20th - The first gasoline-powered car debuts in Springfield, Massachusetts, United States.
[I have actually been to Sprinfield, Ma and did not know this about it!]
Nov 10th - Granville T Woods patents electric railway
Dec 15th - James Naismith invents basketball (Canada)
Dec 21st - 18 students play 1st basketball game (Springfield College)
Dec 29th - Edison patents "transmission of signals electrically" (radio)

Here are a few things that are not quite as old as our house:

Coca Cola - it was founded January 29, 1892 in Georgia
Snickers, M&Ms & Skittles:)
Nutella was created in 1940s
The Boxer Rebellion War took place between 1898 and 1901 [wiki]
Professional football originated by to 1892 [wiki]
World War I - started July 28, 1914
[crazy to think my house was on this earth as WWI & WWII were happening!]
Titanic - not only the movie but the actually ship!
Mickey Mouse - made his debut in 1928 in short film Steamboat Willie
The Great Depression - 1930s
Bonnie & Clyde - wreaking havoc in the 1930s
Al Capone - imprisoned for tax evasion in 1930s
The Model T - automobile built by Ford from 1908 until 1927 ( created by Henry Ford)

And some things that were here before our lovely home:

Ohio became the 17th state in 1803
Edgar Allen Poe 1809-1849
Tiffany & Co was founded in 1837
Baseball was invented in 1839

There are so many more events that happened, I would probably lose quite a bit of audience if I notated them all. I'm hoping this may put it into perspective for you a little - if not I can research more facts if you would like that too:)

We recently upgraded to x1 - the more updated version of Comcast. It is soooo amazing - I highly recommend upgrading to this magical television galaxy..

Anyways, I have been using a friends log in information for HBO Go because we hadn't added that to our plan. Hubs and I have been watching previous seasons of Girls on our iPad like a bunch of fools because I just recently found out that we do indeed have HBO and could be watching it on the actual television. Knowing our luck it is only a 3 month "trial" that is probably going to end this month.. Annoying right??

Whoa! | Bathroom REupdate

Well it's been pretty damn long since I've given you guys any good stuff lately. I failed miserably at the OCD challenge last year and for that I am sorry. BUT we are back in action and we have decided to stick with working on one room at a time but not necessarily finish in a month's time. This really allows us to focus on one space and pay attention to every detail and really perfect it.  The first project of the year was the main bathroom. You may be saying "Hey, didn't she already do that one?" . Yes. Yes we did. I am a perfectionist and I knew it needed to be done again. I wasn't happy with the wall color and there were too many unfinished projects in the space. It was somewhat embarrassing when we had guests over and it looked like a Sundance film production office (whatever that looks like, I just made that up) exploded in there. I think it wasn't completed for so long because I was sort of scared to do some of the projects that needed to b...

in with the old | my best thrift finds

*as you read through this post, have  Thrift Shop by Ryan Lewis and Macklemore  [link attached] play in the background, as I did when I was posting this:)  My husband is - for lack of a better word - cheap. He means well, but it really puts a wrench in most of my design plans. This just makes me work ten times harder to find the best deal out there and still maintain the integrity of my design.  Where do you go for such deals you ask?  Goodwill, duh!  I'm obsessed. Luckily I can soothe my infatuations less than a mile from my house!  Of course I also take a stop into TJ Maxx that's right next door and Pot Belly's too, but that's a topic for another day..  I usually get to GW once a week and I can definitely tell when I haven't been in awhile. ...wow, it really is sounding like an addiction, huh? First, I scout out the furniture - usually I don't find anything because a) It's already been picked through or b) it's t...

our upstairs bath | total gut

This is probably to biggest demo project on the house. This is the yucky space previously known as "the bathroom". Yes, that is my husband in the reflection:) Apparently we forgot to get better "before" photos.. The dimensions of the room were 4x9--not even wide enough for a tub! So this was our first mission when planning out this tiny bath-make room for tub!  Here's a fun little fact: this is the only room in the house that I didn't step more than 2 feet in the doorway. That's how bad this space was!  Here's some fun demo that I luckily did not have to take part in any of it, not even clean up! This is the view coming from the front bedroom on the house. We also did some knocking down of walls and putting up of walls in this room. Luckily it was big enough and didn't take away too much space.  Little bro, pretending to help with the demo...  And this is the guy who was the muscle in all of this:)  ...
