it's fall y'all!

I guess we have a little bit to catch up on don't we..

Let's see here...

Halloween has come and gone. Thank god for that.

I have never really been a fan of the "holiday" and I have been trying to figure out why. It could be because no one ever understood my costumes - which could be because I was a baby for 9 years straight. It could be because I don't really care for candy - I always was excited to get the bag of chips for the "weird" house. Or maybe it's because no one ever invites me to any parties.. Who knows..

Anyways, since we are now homeowners we were so excited to get little trick or treaters this year! We went out and spent our hard earned money on candy for stranger's kids. Mike had the entire day off and was really excited to get to pass out candy to the neighbor children - I on the other hand, had to work - boo.

Results of the evening = not. one. single. kid. Waste of a night. Aprile's - 0 Halloween - 1

Moving on.

Last weekend I impulsively thought it was a great idea to invite my entire extended family over for dinner..
Here are a few fun facts we should know before we react:
1. I was having about 15 people over and had about 10 chairs
2. My oven doesn't work
3. I had 6 days to prepare and about 23489277423 open projects to complete

Cool

I can't really decide which was the most urgent to take care of first either...

Okay, don't panic. Let's do a potluck! Great, one problem solved.
Luckily my cousin was helpful and found some chairs for me on Facebook! Another problem solved!

The two chairs on the ends my cousin found on one of those sales pages on Facebook. The lady luckily hadn't sold them for a few weeks and was willing to go down in price. There are 3 like these and then a captains chair that needs some small restoration - who knows when I will get to that..

This cutie yellow guy I found on Craigslist for a great price. I think I plan on using it as my vanity chair in the future but for now, extra seating in the living room. I am really liking mustard lately. The color, not the condiment.. Yuck.

As for my million projects? I enlisted the help of my aunt who has an insane amount of energy. On my days off from work, we painted the back stairs, cleared out the guest room and raked all the leaves to the street. I also found some extra time myself to paint the front door inside and out!

The house was ready for guests and our family dinner went off without a hitch (is that the saying?)!

And now what we have all been waiting for...

I'm sure no one but me has been waiting for this but who wants to read "okay and now what Kendra has been waiting for" ?

My CHINA CABINET!

Fun fact:
The difference between a china cabinet and china hutch (did you know there was a difference?) :
cabinet : has legs (see my little guy is raised up on legs)
hutch : will go all the way to the floor - typically with a piece of trim of some sort across the front and sides

I apologize ahead of time for the poor photo angles.. Due to the lack of curtains in the dining room, I just know nobody wants to see my reflection in the glass..

Here is this little cutie I have been waiting for forever! I picked him up all the way in Montgomery, Il last weekend with lots of spiders on it.. yay.
I have been waiting for a china cabinet for months for a few reasons:
To display my beautiful Vera Wang china :)
To be able to empty some of my cabinets in the kitchen! Yay for more kitchen cabinet space!
More cute furniture - Duh.

It has taken me a long time to find a piece that I truly love. Everything was either too bulky or out of my price range or ugly. So happy I finally came across this one - true love waits. Ha kidding...

I always enjoy looking at styling in magazines and seeing different techniques but it is always something I struggle with myself. It either looks too busy, too bare or like I'm trying to hard. I guess I just need to keep practicing:/ I tried my best with this one, we will see:)

Yes, I only have 7 sets of china.. Thank you for noticing..

So, what do you think?
:)

Enjoy the Sunday, Folks!

I most commonly hear that everyone can "hear me" when they read my blog. I am not sure if that is bad news or good news..

Whoa! | Bathroom REupdate

Well it's been pretty damn long since I've given you guys any good stuff lately. I failed miserably at the OCD challenge last year and for that I am sorry. BUT we are back in action and we have decided to stick with working on one room at a time but not necessarily finish in a month's time. This really allows us to focus on one space and pay attention to every detail and really perfect it.  The first project of the year was the main bathroom. You may be saying "Hey, didn't she already do that one?" . Yes. Yes we did. I am a perfectionist and I knew it needed to be done again. I wasn't happy with the wall color and there were too many unfinished projects in the space. It was somewhat embarrassing when we had guests over and it looked like a Sundance film production office (whatever that looks like, I just made that up) exploded in there. I think it wasn't completed for so long because I was sort of scared to do some of the projects that needed to b...

in with the old | my best thrift finds

*as you read through this post, have  Thrift Shop by Ryan Lewis and Macklemore  [link attached] play in the background, as I did when I was posting this:)  My husband is - for lack of a better word - cheap. He means well, but it really puts a wrench in most of my design plans. This just makes me work ten times harder to find the best deal out there and still maintain the integrity of my design.  Where do you go for such deals you ask?  Goodwill, duh!  I'm obsessed. Luckily I can soothe my infatuations less than a mile from my house!  Of course I also take a stop into TJ Maxx that's right next door and Pot Belly's too, but that's a topic for another day..  I usually get to GW once a week and I can definitely tell when I haven't been in awhile. ...wow, it really is sounding like an addiction, huh? First, I scout out the furniture - usually I don't find anything because a) It's already been picked through or b) it's t...

our upstairs bath | total gut

This is probably to biggest demo project on the house. This is the yucky space previously known as "the bathroom". Yes, that is my husband in the reflection:) Apparently we forgot to get better "before" photos.. The dimensions of the room were 4x9--not even wide enough for a tub! So this was our first mission when planning out this tiny bath-make room for tub!  Here's a fun little fact: this is the only room in the house that I didn't step more than 2 feet in the doorway. That's how bad this space was!  Here's some fun demo that I luckily did not have to take part in any of it, not even clean up! This is the view coming from the front bedroom on the house. We also did some knocking down of walls and putting up of walls in this room. Luckily it was big enough and didn't take away too much space.  Little bro, pretending to help with the demo...  And this is the guy who was the muscle in all of this:)  ...
